Job Summary
This is a Locum replacement tertiary endocrine consultant NHS post working 10 Programmed Activities per week. The post holder will join a progressive paediatric diabetes and endocrinology team delivering tertiary services, including obesity clinics and rare disease services.
The role includes delivery of secondary and tertiary endocrine services through a combination of virtual and face-to-face clinics, inpatient care, and potential outreach services depending on service need. The post holder will contribute to the National Rare Diabetes Service alongside substantive consultants at Birmingham Children’s Hospital.
The position includes:
8.0 Direct Clinical Care Programmed Activities
2.0 Supporting Professional Activities
Adjustment of 0.25 PA from clinical care to SPA during the first year post CCST or for locum consultants
Flexible working arrangements may be considered.
Key Responsibilities
Deliver secondary and tertiary endocrine services including clinics and inpatient care
Contribute to the National Rare Diabetes Service
Participate in on-call rota 1:6.5 WTE for tertiary diabetes and endocrinology services, including weekend ward rounds
Provide on-call support to regional District General Hospitals
Cross-cover clinical duties during colleague absences
Deliver undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and supervise staff
Support and facilitate clinical research in endocrinology, metabolic bone disease, diabetes, and rare diabetes forms
Participate in clinical trials and portfolio studies
Engage in Clinical Governance framework including CPD and CME requirements
Participate in audit and review of personal practice
Adhere to safeguarding legislation and Trust safeguarding responsibilities
Confirm visa eligibility in line with UKVI regulations where applicable
Requirements & Qualifications
- Tertiary trained paediatric endocrinology expertise
- Experience delivering paediatric endocrine services at secondary and tertiary levels
- Ability to work within a busy multidisciplinary team
- Commitment to teaching, research, governance, and safeguarding
- Willingness to participate in cross-cover and on-call duties
Teaching
The post holder will contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate medical education, including mentoring and supervision. The Trust supports teaching for the University of Birmingham Medical School and Aston Medical School.
Research
Support and facilitation of clinical research within the Endocrinology and Diabetes department is expected, including participation in clinical trials and research studies.
Clinical Governance
Active participation in Clinical Governance activities, CPD, audits, and compliance with Royal College guidance is required.
